Review of ClipperCreek HCS-60 in Electric Car Insider

EVSE REVIEW

ClipperCreek HCS-60

By Electric Car Insider Magazine

January 2015

ClipperCreek has been renowned as the maker of extremely rugged and reliable electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) since the reemergence of the EV industry in 2007. To reinforce that reputation, the company has gone so far as to post videos on YouTube showing company employees beating an HCS-40 with a hammer and a baseball bat until the bat split in two, sending large scary splinters flying across the parking lot. The tough plastic housing of the charge station was unharmed. Don’t try this at home kids. Or at least wear a face shield and protective clothing and conduct the test far from expensive cars.

Although I didn’t beat my test unit with a hammer, over the course of six months of use I did give it the kind of real-world workout that most people can expect the unit to endure. That included rolling over the cord numerous times with my car. I didn’t perform that test intentionally, but I was pleased to see that the cable did not sustain any damage and the unit continued to work perfectly.

The HCS-60 is a 48 amp station that can deliver up to 11.5 kW of power. That’s more than most EVs on the road can use. EVs that can take advantage of the extra power the HCS-60 can deliver over its siblings include the Toyota RAV 4 EV, Mercedes Benz B-Class ED, and the Tesla Roadster and Model S with supplied adapters. Some EV trucks can also charge at the higher rates the HCS-60 can deliver.

Is the HCS-60 the right charger for you? It really depends on what you drive.

A Tesla Roadster can charge at up to 16.8 kW (56 mph) and a Model S with dual chargers can charge at up to 20 kW (60 mph). If a Roadster or Model S is your only EV, you may want to get the higher-power Tesla charger, but if you have another EV which uses the standard J1772 connector, the HCS-60 will be able to charge both the Tesla (using the supplied adapter) and the other EV. If you don’t need to charge both EVs at the same time, that could save a couple thousand bucks between the hardware and installation.

If  you  have  a  Toyota  RAV  4  EV  or Mercedes-Benz  B-Class  ED,  you’ll  want  to strongly consider the ClipperCreek HCS-60. It is bulletproof. Or at least baseball bat proof. At $899 direct from ClipperCreek it’s really inexpensive for such a high-quality, high-power charger.

The HCS-60  is  compatible  with  all  plug-in  vehicles available today. The output power of the unit is variable and depends on vehicle demand, which is set by the vehicle. So it will certainly be up to the task of charging any EV that becomes available for the next many years. My Model S has dual charger, but I’ve never had a circumstance where I needed to charge it faster than the HCS-60 could deliver. (I still sleep 8 hrs).

As electronics gizmos go, ClipperCreek charge stations are pretty boring to review. I bought an LCS-25 direct from ClipperCreek in 2013 and I’ve never found anything to complain about in over a year and a half of daily use. Not a single failure of any kind. Not even a hung state that requires a reset, unusual for a software based appliance. The thing just hangs on the wall quietly doing its job. No alarm beeps. No buzzing or erratic behavior like most of my other electrical equipment is prone to engage in from time to time. And certainly not anything exciting like a fi e. You’d think that something that handles as much power as the HCS-60 would at least put out a puff of smoke now and again. Or melt a little and require a recall like my Tesla charge adapter. But no, nothing. Just the same steady green light the whole

time. I suppose I’ll get used to that kind of rock solid reliability, although I’ll continue to wonder why there are so few EVSE made with that kind of quality.

“The larger conductor size for the high power transfer required special care to design for real world operation,” explained Jason France, CEO of ClipperCreek, “we used rubber over-molding to fully seal the connector’s head and increase the durability in the rough commercial world, the rubber cable jacket increases cold weather flexibility of the cable.”

The HCS-60 requires a 60 amp circuit and is a hard wired unit because of NEMA and building code requirements. The lower power HCS-40 (7.7 kW) and HCS-50 (9.6 kW) use the same case and are available as plug-in units.  The HCS-50P comes with a 6-50 plug and the HCS-40 ships with either a NEMA 6-50 or 14-50 plug. The model number indicates what kind of circuit it requires.

All ClipperCreek  EVSE  can  work  with either 204v or 208v AC circuits in single phase.

The HCS-40 is the first major brand, low cost, Level 2 electric vehicle charging station to break through to the 32 Amp level without increasing the selling price. ClipperCreek’s focus on continuous product value improvement for electric vehicle customers is unprecedented in the market. Charging at 32 Amps and 240Volts, the 7.7KW HCS-40 now offers increased power for cost conscious customers. All of ClipperCreek’s charging station products are safety certified by independent testing laboratories and compatible with all plug in vehicles available today.

“We are constantly developing new products to bring the next level of customer value to the market,” said Jason France, President and Founder of ClipperCreek. “After an in depth analysis, the ClipperCreek team determined the standards would allow an additional 480 Watts of power for charging without compromising quality, safety, or durability. The company’s HCS-40 and CS-40 models are now offered at the 32 Amp charging level with no increase in price.”

The HCS-40 is well-built, easy to install, and simple to use which translates into installation cost savings when compared to other products on the market. After the junction box is run from the main service, installing the HCS-40 is a snap. Using the provided 2 wall screws and 3 power wires, any licensed electrician can install an HCS-40 in no time at all. There is no need to disassemble the unit or to try to understand complicated installation instructions. In fact, no assembly required. An optional connector holster is available for just $19.

CLIPPERCREEK DONATES EV CHARGING STATIONS

Earlier this month it was announced that ClipperCreek, Inc., will donate 2 EV charging stations to the city of Auburn, California. This story has since been published in the Auburn Journal. The complete article is shared below.

Auburn amps up the draw for electric cars

2 charging stations coming to City Hall, Multi Modal Station in 2015

By: Amy Lobenberg, Journal Staff Writer

2 charging stations coming to City Hall, Multi Modal Station in 2015

Thanks to the combination of a $10,000 grant and two electronic vehicle charging stations, donated by an up-and-coming local business, the city of Auburn is poised to ride the wave of the future by inviting alternative-energy motorists to visit town.

Mayor Bridget Powers and City Councilman Mike Holmes worked together to find funding for the $ 13,570 vehicle charging stations project, which was unanimously approved Monday night by the council.

Holmes, who is chairman of the Placer County Air Pollution District, said he encouraged the city to apply for the program’s Clean Air Grant, which it received in April in the amount of $10,000. The additional $3,570 will come out of the city general fund.

Powers said the two chargers needed to complete the project, which cost $1,309 apiece, are being donated by ClipperCreek Inc. owner Jason France.

“Many years ago, Jason said to me, ‘You know, if you want to put charging stations in and if you have built the facilities to get the power and all that, I can provide the charging stations,’” said Powers. “I really appreciate what ClipperCreek is doing for us. It’s great that a local business is doing something to support Auburn.”

France’s company has been in town since 2006, and France has been in the electric car business since 1994. He said Tuesday that he is happy to help the city with alternative fueling options.

“I told Bridget and the city that we would definitely donate two of our HCS-40 models and pedestals at no cost because we love Auburn, the citizens and electric cars.”

The two devices are set to be placed in the parking lot of City Hall and in the parking lot of the Multi Modal Station near Nevada Street and Blocker Drive.

Council members said Monday that they hope the devices boost local tourism and the economy.

The two stations will be open to public use and will be offered free of charge.

Bernie Schroeder, director of Public Works, said the components needed to install a fee system would be too costly for the city. She added that the stations would require little or  no upkeep.

“There is very little maintenance involved whatsoever,” Schroeder said. “They are foolproof minus any vandalism that may occur.”

France said he felt Auburn is making the right move by including more charging stations within the city. He noted that he has several of the devices in the parking lot of his business, at 11850 Kemper Road, which are used frequently by employees and visitors.

“We get a significant number of people who stop here on their way to Tahoe,” said France. “Then, while they are waiting, they walk across the street to Chevy’s or one of the other restaurants.”

France added that, based on market research, electric cars are growing in popularity, which has helped his business become a competitive, worldwide presence.

“This is the decade of the electric car,” said France. “I am sure of it.”

City Administrative Analyst Megan Siren said the two Auburn charging stations will be up and running by May 31, 2015.

THE CLIPPERCREEK HCS-40 HAS ARRIVED

ClipperCreek Introduces the HCS-40, Lowest Priced 30 Amp 240V Vehicle Charge Station Starting at $590

HCS-40_300x300 (2)
The HCS-40 EV Charging Station by ClipperCreek

AUBURN, Calif., December 9, 2013 — ClipperCreek today introduced its latest product, the HCS-40, a 30 Amp, 240 Volt Level 2 electric vehicle charging station. The HCS is indoor/outdoor rated and designed to be the most rugged station available. With standard 25 feet of charging cable, a no strings attached 3 year warranty, and an easy 3 step installation process, the HCS can be installed anywhere by practically any qualified person for the lowest product price and lowest installation cost in the industry.

“The HCS-40 is truly ClipperCreek tough,” said Jason France, ClipperCreek’s CEO. “We have 16 years of field experience to know what happens to charging stations in the real world, and we went out of our way to develop a unit that could survive the worst abuse and still charge your vehicle every time.”

For ClipperCreek low cost does not mean “cheap”. The HCS-40 is built “American Tough”, designed to be the last charging station you will ever need. With a fully sealed NEMA 4 enclosure the HCS-40 delivers power in even the most punishing environments. The durability of the HCS-40 is only shadowed by its best in class standard feature offerings like: 25 feet of charging cable, a no strings attached 3 year warranty, and an optional $19 connector holster for the utmost confidence and convenience while charging.

The HCS-40 is not only well-built, it is easy to install and simple to use. After the junction box is run from the main service, installing the HCS is a snap, just two wall screws and 3 power wires; any licensed electrician can install an HCS-40 in no time at all. No need to disassemble the unit or try to understand complicated installation instructions, in fact, no assembly required.

“We wanted to extend our low price, high quality design to the high power residential charging stations,” said Dave Packard, of ClipperCreek. “This product has it all, lowest industry price, longest charge cord, virtually indestructible enclosure and an integrated cable hanging system designed to keep the cable off the wall. We may not have been the first to offer a low cost 30A charging station, but we took our time and now we have the best on the market.”

The HCS-40 is available for immediate delivery.
