Electric Car Insider: ClipperCreek offers high-quality 3.6kW charge station for $379

ClipperCreek offers high-quality 3.6kW charge station for $379

Posted 03.24.2015 in News by Christopher

ClipperCreek has again lowered pricing on their 240 volt 15 amp charge station. The unit is matched for plug-in cars with 3kW on-board chargers which includes plug-in hybrids, older Leafs, the Chevy Spark and Smart ED. The unit is also ideal for people who want to install the slower 240v charger using an existing 20amp electrical circuit to avoid the expense of installing new wiring to the garage or parking space.

The new low price level is a fairly significant development. Just a little more than two years ago the LCS-20 was the industry’s low-cost leader at $995. The LCS-20 is now over $100 less than the company’s LCS-25, a 20amp charger which uses the same enclosure and a slightly higher amperage, 3 foot longer cord. The sub-$400 price makes the LCS-20 the lowest cost 240v charger available from a major manufacturer.

The LCS-20 is intended for hard-wired installation in a garage or parking area.  The compact rugged case, shared across the company’s LCS line, carries a NEMA 4 rating suitable for outdoor installations. The outdoor rating means this unit could also be useful for workplace charging where charge speed is not an issue, access to a larger number of chargers is needed. At 67% of the price of the Clipper Creek HCS-40 30-amp unit, three of the LCS-20s could be purchased for the cost of two HCS-40s.

In workplace or public settings where access must be limited, LCS-20 can be installed in a locking cabinet or it can be used with the Liberty Access Technologies’ Hydra Control Module access control and billing system.  The main audience for this simple, easy to use unit, however is residential users.

Except for cases where an EV driver is looking to conform to the limitations of existing wiring or a constrained budget, the selection of charger rating is usually dictated by the specifications of the car. In a residential installation, there’s usually no advantage to purchasing a more expensive charging station that has greater capacity than a car can handle. The exception to this is if a purchaser wants to “future-proof” the installation and anticipates the purchase of an electric car with a faster onboard charger, but as the rapid price drops mentioned above indicate, that rationale might be a false economy.

For people looking to save some money by purchasing a lower cost 240v charger or using existing wiring, here’s a good rule of thumb to compare the power ratings of various charge units available from ClipperCreek and others:

  • 15 amp, 3.6 kw – 10 miles per hour of charge (mph)
  • 20 amp, 4.8 kw – 15 mph
  • 30 amp, 7.2 kw – 20 mph

These rule of thumb estimates use rounding and individual results may vary, but the ratios here will remain accurate. Measuring charge rate in mph usually makes for a more useful and easy to understand comparison than citing the watts.

The 30amp Clipper Creek HCS-40 will charge a car twice as fast as the 15 amp LCS-20 if the car has a 6.6kW charger like the Fiat 500e, Ford Focus Electric, Honda Fit EV and most newer Leafs. Car that have a 3.3kW on-board charger, like the Chevy Spark, Mitsubishi iMiEV, Smart ED or most plug-in hybrids, will charge at 10mph no matter how fast the wall mounted charge station (charge cord) is.

A couple of thoughtful design features make it clear that Clipper Creek designers have enough experience to understand the little details that make the charger easier to use. There is no on/off button.  The unit stays in a very low-power standby mode, drawing power only to light the single status LED, until it is plugged in.

Cord reel ears are integrated into charger body; the cord wraps around the unit to keep it off the floor and away from tires and other damage. ClipperCreek provides a rugged, low cost plasic charge coupler holster that keeps the charge coupler out of the way until needed.

The company’s reputation for reliability is well deserved. This reporter’s experience with two ClipperCreek units, an LCS-25 and an HCS-60 has been that they operate flawlessly. Neither one has ever had so much as a hiccup and have never required a reset or any other attention. The LCS-20 is made in America, has ETL Certification and comes with a 3 year warranty.

For drivers who own a plug-in hybrid like the Chevy Volt, Ford Fusion Energi, Plug-in Prius or or a battery electric with a 3.3 kW charger like the Chevy Spark EV, Mitsubishi iMiEV or Smart ED, the ClipperCreek LCS-20 is a terrific deal.

The LCS-20 is also a great low cost option for cars with a 6.6kW charger whose owners don’t drive a lot and don’t need quick turn-around on trips to and from home during the day. For EV drivers that do occasionally need to charge at home at the fastest rate their car can handle, it will be worthwhile to spend the extra $195 for the HCS-40.

EVSE REVIEW

ClipperCreek HCS-60

By Electric Car Insider Magazine

January 2015

ClipperCreek has been renowned as the maker of extremely rugged and reliable electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) since the reemergence of the EV industry in 2007. To reinforce that reputation, the company has gone so far as to post videos on YouTube showing company employees beating an HCS-40 with a hammer and a baseball bat until the bat split in two, sending large scary splinters flying across the parking lot. The tough plastic housing of the charge station was unharmed. Don’t try this at home kids. Or at least wear a face shield and protective clothing and conduct the test far from expensive cars.

Although I didn’t beat my test unit with a hammer, over the course of six months of use I did give it the kind of real-world workout that most people can expect the unit to endure. That included rolling over the cord numerous times with my car. I didn’t perform that test intentionally, but I was pleased to see that the cable did not sustain any damage and the unit continued to work perfectly.

The HCS-60 is a 48 amp station that can deliver up to 11.5 kW of power. That’s more than most EVs on the road can use. EVs that can take advantage of the extra power the HCS-60 can deliver over its siblings include the Toyota RAV 4 EV, Mercedes Benz B-Class ED, and the Tesla Roadster and Model S with supplied adapters. Some EV trucks can also charge at the higher rates the HCS-60 can deliver.

Is the HCS-60 the right charger for you? It really depends on what you drive.

A Tesla Roadster can charge at up to 16.8 kW (56 mph) and a Model S with dual chargers can charge at up to 20 kW (60 mph). If a Roadster or Model S is your only EV, you may want to get the higher-power Tesla charger, but if you have another EV which uses the standard J1772 connector, the HCS-60 will be able to charge both the Tesla (using the supplied adapter) and the other EV. If you don’t need to charge both EVs at the same time, that could save a couple thousand bucks between the hardware and installation.

If  you  have  a  Toyota  RAV  4  EV  or Mercedes-Benz  B-Class  ED,  you’ll  want  to strongly consider the ClipperCreek HCS-60. It is bulletproof. Or at least baseball bat proof. At $899 direct from ClipperCreek it’s really inexpensive for such a high-quality, high-power charger.

The HCS-60  is  compatible  with  all  plug-in  vehicles available today. The output power of the unit is variable and depends on vehicle demand, which is set by the vehicle. So it will certainly be up to the task of charging any EV that becomes available for the next many years. My Model S has dual charger, but I’ve never had a circumstance where I needed to charge it faster than the HCS-60 could deliver. (I still sleep 8 hrs).

As electronics gizmos go, ClipperCreek charge stations are pretty boring to review. I bought an LCS-25 direct from ClipperCreek in 2013 and I’ve never found anything to complain about in over a year and a half of daily use. Not a single failure of any kind. Not even a hung state that requires a reset, unusual for a software based appliance. The thing just hangs on the wall quietly doing its job. No alarm beeps. No buzzing or erratic behavior like most of my other electrical equipment is prone to engage in from time to time. And certainly not anything exciting like a fi e. You’d think that something that handles as much power as the HCS-60 would at least put out a puff of smoke now and again. Or melt a little and require a recall like my Tesla charge adapter. But no, nothing. Just the same steady green light the whole

time. I suppose I’ll get used to that kind of rock solid reliability, although I’ll continue to wonder why there are so few EVSE made with that kind of quality.

“The larger conductor size for the high power transfer required special care to design for real world operation,” explained Jason France, CEO of ClipperCreek, “we used rubber over-molding to fully seal the connector’s head and increase the durability in the rough commercial world, the rubber cable jacket increases cold weather flexibility of the cable.”

The HCS-60 requires a 60 amp circuit and is a hard wired unit because of NEMA and building code requirements. The lower power HCS-40 (7.7 kW) and HCS-50 (9.6 kW) use the same case and are available as plug-in units.  The HCS-50P comes with a 6-50 plug and the HCS-40 ships with either a NEMA 6-50 or 14-50 plug. The model number indicates what kind of circuit it requires.

All ClipperCreek  EVSE  can  work  with either 204v or 208v AC circuits in single phase.
